Under the sea themed cookies are perfect for Shark week, movie nights, and then some. Enjoy these delicious aquariums of fun and cookie rolled into one.
As the saying goes, life is better under the sea. That said, above land we get to eat the fishies in unique and fabulous ways and with these underwater themed cookies we can eat the rocks too! Blow your kid’s minds as you pull out all the delicious ingredients and watch as everyone assembles their own creative aquarium themed or ocean themed cookies.
What are under the sea cookies?
These are simple and easy “Sea” themed cookies that are perfect for any occasion. Especially whole watching movies, a party or other tropical events. Make them with the kids or make them yourself and you’re sure to be in for a fun time. These cookies are as much fun to make as they are to eat! Using chocolate candy rocks, sprinkles, graham crumbs, and more we get the most perfect display of underwater fun that you won’t want to wait to sink your teeth into.
Under the Sea Cookie Ingredients
-Sugar cookies: Bake and cool your favorite sugar cookies recipe or buy unfrosted premade cookies from the bakery section in your grocery store to cut down on time and effort.
-Buttercream: Use homemade or storebought but you will want your vanilla buttercream to be lightly dyed blue for perfect ocean water color.
-Rocks: We don’t want just any rocks, we want the chocolate candy rocks. These are great for looks and taste pretty incredible too!
-Fish: Using Swedish fish we can get big edible fishes to swim around on our cookies. You could also buy blue gummy sharks for a shark themed cookie display.
-Dory fish candy: I found this candy mixture at Michaels craft store but look online for a retailer near you.
Graham cracker: We only need 1 graham cracker to have enough “sand” for the cookies, but we will need it crushed into sand-like dust to work well.
How to make under the sea cookies
Prepare your homemade vanilla buttercream as directed in recipe card or dye your storebought frosting blue and set aside.
Spread the frosting over the tops of cooled round sugar cookies.
Arrange chocolate rock candies at the bottom of the circle.
Sprinkle some “sand” graham cracker crumb over the top, trying to place it around the rocks and at the bottom half of the cookie.
Place 1 gummy shark of Swedish fish on the cookie, swimming above the rocks. Add in any Dory fish candy if you have some or other tiny fishy candies if you have them.
That’s it!
Enjoy!

What homemade sugar cookies do you recommend?
I personally enjoy using my super soft sugar cookies recipe for this themed dessert but even my Copycat Swig Sugar Cookies work amazingly well. If you’re not a baker you can just grab a roll of premade sugar cookie dough or a package of sugar cookie mix and assemble it as directed on the package. Much less effort, but still a lot of fun!
How long are ocean themed cookies good for?
The frosting on these cookies will have them feeling soft for days if properly stored but anyone knows that gummy candies when left out can become a bit chewier than desired. For that reason, I recommend not allowing the cookies to last too long after assembly (not like that’d be a problem). Keep them stored layered separated by wax paper or parchment paper in an airtight container for up to a few days.
