Homemade Peach and Raspberry Jam
If you are lucky to have any peaches left on your tree, it is time to use them! And the next time you are at Costco or your local grocery store, grab some fresh raspberries too so that you can make this lovely freezer jam. Whether you are an experienced jam maker or a beginner in the kitchen, raspberry peach freezer jam is a great recipe to try. It is perfect for spreading on toast, using as a topping for ice cream, or even giving as a homemade gift.
Essentials of Jam Making
- Understanding Pectin: Pectin is a natural substance found in fruits that is responsible for the gelling of jams and jellies. It is most abundant in underripe fruits and decreases as the fruit ripens. Some fruits, such as apples and citrus, have high levels of pectin, while others, like peaches and strawberries, have lower levels. To ensure that your jam sets properly, it is important to use fruits that are high in pectin or add pectin to your recipe.
- Role of Sugar in Jam: Sugar plays a crucial role in the texture, flavor, and preservation of jam. It acts as a preservative by inhibiting the growth of bacteria and mold, and it also helps to set the jam by reacting with the pectin. The amount of sugar needed varies depending on the fruit used and the desired level of sweetness. However, it is important not to reduce the amount of sugar too much as it can affect the jam’s texture and shelf life.
- Importance of Acidity: Acidity is another important factor in jam making. It helps to activate the pectin and create the proper texture. Some fruits, such as citrus and tart apples, are naturally high in acidity, while others, like peaches and strawberries, are low. If using low-acid fruits, it is important to add an acid, such as lemon juice, to the recipe to ensure proper gelling.
Raspberry Peach Jam Ingredients
Raspberries: You will need 2 pints of fresh raspberries to make the 3 cups of crushed raspberries needed for this recipe.
Peaches: Using 1 pound of fresh peaches, finely chopped, will give this jam an amazing flavor and texture.
Sugar: Add in 3 cups of sugar to give this jam a nice sweet taste.
Pectin: 1 box of pectin is the key ingredient in this jam recipe. I used Sure Jell Pectin and it worked great!
Water: To create the perfect jam consistency, use 1 cup of water.
Equipment
Jars: You will need a few airtight containers or jars to freeze the jam in. This recipe makes about 6 cups, depending on the size of the jar or container will determine how many you need.
How to make Raspberry Peach Freezer Jam
Prep
Start by washing, destemming, and crushing the raspberries. You can try and strain out some of the seeds if you would like- I never have the patience for this. Then, peel, pit, and finely chop the peaches.
Jam Mixture
In a large saucepan, combine the sugar and the pectin. Then, turn the heat on medium-high. Next, add in the water and whisk it all to combine well.
Proceed to bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly. Let it boil for 1 minute while continuing to stir.
Then remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in peaches and raspberries.
Once thoroughly mixed, transfer the jam to the containers, leaving about ½” space at the top for expansion. Cover containers and let them sit at room temperature for 24 hours.
Enjoy one of the jars immediately, freeze the rest for up to a year!
Variations and Flavor Twists for Homemade Jam
Incorporating Additional Fruits
Raspberry Peach Freezer Jam is a delicious combination of two fruits, but that doesn’t mean you can’t mix it up with additional flavors. Consider adding some blueberries or strawberries for a mixed berry jam. Or, try using apricots or nectarines instead of peaches for a different twist on the recipe.
To incorporate additional fruits, simply substitute a portion of the raspberries or peaches with your desired fruit. Keep in mind that some fruits may require additional sugar to balance out their tartness.
Experimenting with Spices and Herbs
For those who like to experiment with flavors, adding spices or herbs to Raspberry Peach Freezer Jam can create a unique and exciting taste. Consider adding cinnamon, nutmeg, or ginger for a warm and spicy flavor. Or, try adding fresh herbs like basil or thyme for a refreshing and herbaceous taste.
To experiment with spices and herbs, start with small amounts and taste as you go. Too much spice or herb can overpower the fruit flavors, so it’s important to find the right balance. Consider using a spice blend or herb mixture for added convenience and flavor complexity.

How long does raspberry peach jam last?
Homemade freezer jam can last for up to a year in the freezer if stored properly in an airtight container. Once thawed, the jam should be consumed within 2-3 months and stored in the refrigerator.
Canning and Storage of Jam from Scratch
Filling the Jars: Once the raspberry peach freezer jam is ready, it’s time to fill the jars. Using a canning funnel can make this process easier and less messy. Fill the jars with the jam, leaving about 1/2 inch of headspace at the top. Wipe the rims of the jars with a clean, damp cloth to remove any excess jam.
Sealing and Freezing Procedures: To seal the jars, place the lids on top and screw on the bands until they are snug but not too tight. Place the jars in the freezer, leaving them for at least 24 hours to ensure they are fully frozen. Once frozen, the bands can be tightened a bit more to ensure a secure seal.
Thawing and Serving Suggestions: When ready to use, remove the desired amount of jam from the freezer and place it in the refrigerator to thaw overnight. The jam can also be thawed at room temperature for a few hours. Once thawed, the jam can be stored in the refrigerator for up to three weeks.
Do canning jars need to be hot before using?
While your jars do not need to be incredibly hot, they do need to be sterilized and warm. Most people choose to boil their jars in a pot filled with water, with water inside the jars. Boiling for 10 minutes and then turning the heat down is a good way to sterilize and maintain heat on the jars. Another option is to place cleaned jars in the dishwasher without soap and let them heat up that way. As a note, all jars should be washed prior to use using soapy water.
Do you need to boil the lids when canning?
While you should only use lids once for canning, they should be prepped in advance. You should not boil the lids. Unlike jars, they can be kept at room temperature until use. You do not even have to keep them in simmering water (but you can if you want to). Just wash with soapy water, dry, and then set aside until ready to use.
Can freezer jam be made with less sugar than traditional jam recipes?
Yes, freezer jam can be made with less sugar than traditional jam recipes. However, it’s important to note that sugar acts as a preservative and helps to prevent the growth of bacteria in the jam. If less sugar is used, the jam may not keep as long and may need to be consumed within a shorter period of time. There are also alternative sweeteners that can be used, such as honey or maple syrup, but these may affect the texture and flavor of the jam. It’s recommended to follow a trusted recipe when making changes to the amount of sugar used.
Can you overcook homemade jam?
Yes, this is a really important thing to note. You can overcook your jam by letting it boil for too long. If this happens, the sugars can either burn and give you a gross jam or become a hard rock-solid lump. Neither of these is tasty or ideal.
